For Rest

...is a healing station

Neglected Pollution

The introduction of harmful materials in our built environments comes in many forms. We’re of course familiar with air, water, and soil pollution. But what about the effects of noise pollution?

For Rest is an urban shelter from polluting noises and negative energies in our cities.”

Human beings are part of the natural world, we did not evolve in cities. Industrial noises, transportation, and endless construction in our cities disrupts our natural balance. Causing us physical and psychological problems like stress, sleep deprivation, even communication and connection problems.

For Rest aims to provide calming shelter for resting. Raising awareness about the negative impact of noise pollution in our urban environments in a playful, architectural, interactive experience for city dwellers. She offers urbanites a way to connect with the natural world and understand the impact of human activity in our cities.

For Rest transforms industrial noise pollution into natural sounds. When approaching, or sitting next to her, she instantly changes the way we feel, relieving stress, inducing relaxation, and increasing the connection to our bodies and each other.

She is a calming shelter from noxious frequencies, transforming both the environment, and us.

Nature Cure

We designed her so that human contact brings her to life.

She responds by intermittently flickering her transparent leaves to a milky white. She then plays back a selection of original wild sounds recorded from all over the world, responding to the environment in real-time. Transforming noxious, city frequencies into a nature cure.

Aesthetically, she looks naturalistic, yet…she’s undeniably not of nature.

Her sound library, featuring original recordings from Asia, Africa and Europe, takes the same approach. Mixing binaural field recordings with spatially adaptive studio-treated artifacts. A 3D sound system moves audio around and through our bodies in space when played back.

Natural and synthesized atmospheres, low and high frequency waves, murmurs, squawks, calls, insect movement and bird song are recalled from her generative sound library. Playing back different sounds, moods, tones, pulses and spatial movements as her sensors read, and respond, to the environment around her.

Healing Station

For Rest, anywhere in the city.

For Rest can be attached to any artificial construction, like bus stops, cafes, shops, pavilions and street lights. As a healing station, she’s designed to provide individuals in public spaces a way to relax, de-stress and recharge. She can be customised to offer proprietors, landowners and the public a tailored, 1:1 healing experience.

Healing Park

To achieve a collective transformation, she takes the form of a connected, urban jungle or healing park. Her design is customised to each location, complimenting and responding to the landscape and noise hot spots in her shape and position.

She’s a powerful tool that shows how interactive architecture and generative design can tackle our urban problems directly, encouraging mindfulness, health and wellness in our citizens.

Whether you’re waiting for the bus, grabbing a coffee, or taking a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. For Rest is a sanctuary of calm and relaxation that centers, focuses, refreshes and transforms our often clouded, anxious city lives.
